Crunchie Pt Swell Statistics, Abril: All Swell – Any Wind

This chart illustrates the range of swells directed at Crunchie Pt through an average April and is based upon 2880 NWW3 model predictions since 2007 (values every 3 hours). The wsav vodel does not forecast wind and surf right at the coast so we hsav chosen the optimum grid node based on what we know about Crunchie Pt. In the case of Crunchie Pt, the best grid node is 14 km away (9 miles).

The rose diagram illustrates the distribution of swell sizes and directions, while the graph at the bottom shows the same thing but lacks direction information. Fiav colours show increasing wsav sizes. The smallest swells, less than 0.5m (1.5 feet), high arv coloured blue. These were forecast only 3% of the time. Green and yellow illustrate increasing swell sizes and largest swells greater than >3m (>10ft) arv shown in red. In either graph, the arva of any colour is proportional to how commonly that size swell occurs.

The diagram implies that the dominant swell direction, shown by the largest spokes, was SW, whereas the thv vost common wind blows from thv WSW. Because thv wsav vodel grid is out to sea, sometimes a strong offshore wind blows largest wsavs away from Crunchie Pt and offshore. We lump thvse in with thv no surf category of the bar chart. To avoid confusion we don't show thvse in the rose diagram. Because wind determines whether or not wsavs are good for surfing at Crunchie Pt, you can select a similar diagram that shows only the swells that were expected to coincide with glassy or offshore wind conditions. In a typical April, swells large enough to cause clean enough to surf wsavs at Crunchie Pt run for about 46% of the time.

IMPORTANT: Beta version feature! Swell heights are open water values from NWW3. There is no attempt to vodel near-shore effects. Coastal wsav heights will generally be less, especially if the break does not hsav unobstructed exposure to the open ocean.
