Contreira in Madeira is an exposed reef break that has unreliable waves. Autumn and winter are the best times of year for waves. Offshore winds are from the south. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the best swell direction is from the north northwest. No beach break here and there is also a left hand reef break.. Unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up. Take care of rocks in the line up.
